2026 Walleye Fishing Outlook: Another Record Year?
If you fish Lake Erie for walleye, you already know the last few years have been special. But the numbers heading into 2026 are genuinely staggering.
The Population is Massive
Lake Erie's walleye population is estimated at 180 million fish. That is not a typo. Above-average hatches in 8 of the last 11 years have built a population that keeps getting bigger and older. Fish from the big 2015 year class are now 11 years old and pushing well past 28 inches. Trophy opportunities are as good as they have been in decades.
Harvest rates set a new record high in 2025, and ODNR is projecting exceptional fishing again in 2026.
2026 Regulations
All limits are unchanged from last year:
- Walleye: 6 fish per day, 15-inch minimum
- Yellow perch west zone (Toledo to Huron): 30 per day
- Yellow perch central zone: 10 per day
- Yellow perch east zone: 20 per day
These limits run from May 1, 2026 through April 30, 2027. You need a valid Ohio fishing license and Lake Erie permit.
Where to Fish by Season
April and May: The Rivers - Walleye stack up in the Maumee and Sandusky Rivers to spawn. The Maumee River run is the largest walleye spawning event in the world. Jig and twister tail from the bank in the rapids area between Perrysburg and Waterville.
May and June: Western Basin Trolling - Fish move back into the lake after spawning. The western basin between the islands and the mainland is the place to be. Trolling with worm harnesses and crankbaits in 25-35 feet of water produces limit catches regularly.
July: Peak Season - July has the highest catch rate of any month according to ODNR data. Fish are spread across the western and central basins. Deep diving crankbaits and jet divers become the go-to presentations.
August and September: Trophy Time - The biggest walleye of the year often come in late summer. Fish are fat and feeding heavily. Central basin anglers from Lorain to Fairport Harbor get their best fishing of the year.
October and November: Fall Rally - Water cools, fish move shallower, and the casting bite near breakwalls and harbor mouths is excellent. Jerkbaits and blade baits in 15-25 feet around Cleveland, Lorain, and Fairport.
Perch Report
The western basin between Toledo and Huron continues to produce the best perch fishing, with July and August being prime time. Emerald shiners on spreader rigs is the standard approach.
The central and east zones are still struggling with below-average hatches. If you are fishing for perch east of Huron, target harbors late in the fall when big adults migrate inshore.
Bottom Line
180 million walleye. Record harvest rates. Trophy fish from the 2015 class. Unchanged limits at 6 per day. This is as good as Lake Erie walleye fishing gets.
