A Weekend in Huron: The Angler's Guide
Huron sits right in the middle of the Central Basin, about halfway between Sandusky and Vermilion. It is small enough that you can walk the whole waterfront in an afternoon and big enough that it has everything an angler needs for a weekend trip. A free public launch with plenty of parking, two active tackle shops, three marinas, charter captains running out of the basin, and a fishing pier that stretches two-thirds of a mile into Lake Erie.
Here is how to plan a weekend of it.
Where to Launch
[Huron River Boat Access](https://www.cityofhuron.org/business_detail_T5_R54.php) at 41 Cleveland Road East. Four lanes, 135 vehicle-and-trailer spaces, courtesy docks, restrooms, and handicap-accessible docks. Completed in 2010 and free to use. No launch fees, no parking fees.
The ramp sits on the Huron River about two minutes upstream from where it dumps into the lake. Call the boat basin at (419) 433-4848 for conditions or questions.
Where to Slip Your Boat
If you are bringing your boat for longer than a day:
[Huron Boat Basin](https://www.cityofhuron.org/government/departments/parks_recreation/huron_boat_basin/index.php) is the city-owned marina in downtown Huron with over 120 slips on the river. Great location if you want to walk into town for dinner.
[Huron Lagoons Marina](https://www.huronlagoons.com/) is the bigger option at 350 slips, located about a mile inland on the protected Huron River. Full-service, seasonal from April 1 to November 20. Transient slips available up to 45 feet. (419) 433-3200.
[Cranberry Creek Marina](https://www.cranberrycreekmarina.com/) offers dockage, repairs, and a tackle shop all in one place. Anglers heading out early appreciate not having to make multiple stops.
Where to Get Bait
Two solid options in Huron:

Golden shiners, emerald shiners, fresh live worms, frozen shiners, plus Reef Runners, Dipsy Divers, Bay Rat lures, Berkley Flicker Shads, Rapala Husky Jerks, and Bandit Walleye baits. If they do not have it, you probably did not need it.
Central Basin Bait, Tackle, and Carryout is the classic drive-thru style shop right in the heart of Huron. Live bait, tackle, beer, beverages, and snacks. Perfect for the pre-dawn stop when you forgot something.
Where to Book a Charter
[R&D Sport Fishing Charters](https://www.passintime.com/) with Captain Ron Levitan. Operates out of the Huron Boat Basin from September through November for trophy walleye. Groups up to 6. One of the better-known names in the Central Basin.
[C3 Sport Fishing](https://www.c3sportfishing.net/) with Captain Chris Capito. Departs the Huron Boat Ramp at 7:00 AM, six-hour trips targeting walleye and yellow perch. Runs June 1 to March 31, operating Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays.

The Central Basin off Huron is walleye and perch country. Spring brings the reef fish moving through. By mid-summer, trollers are out deep working worm harnesses behind spreaders. Fall is the perch frenzy everyone waits for. Winter is quiet on the water but the pier still produces.
Shore Fishing: The Huron Pier
If you do not have a boat, the [Huron Lighthouse and Fishing Pier](https://www.shoresandislands.com/listing/huron-lighthouse-&-fishing-pier/12731/) is one of the best free shore fishing spots on the south shore. The pier extends two-thirds of a mile into Lake Erie, and the lighthouse at the end has been flashing red since 1939.
Walleye, perch, smallmouth, sheepshead, and the occasional steelhead all get caught here depending on the season. Nickel Plate Beach, just east of the pier, is another option for surf fishing and casting.

Three solid waterfront options after a day on the water:

Pier Pub at 38 Main Street. Right next door to Old Fish House. Another waterfront spot with a solid casual menu.
[Viking's Den](https://www.huronlagoons.com/) at Huron Lagoons Marina, 100 Laguna Drive. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Free boat docking while you dine. Best view if you are coming off the water with the boat.
Where to Stay
[Sawmill Creek by Cedar Point Resorts](https://www.sixflags.com/sawmillcreekresort) at 400 Sawmill Creek Drive is the biggest lodging option in town. Cedar Point bought the property and completed a full renovation in 2022. Golf, dining, and 239 rooms on Lake Erie. Miller's Table is their signature restaurant.
For smaller options, downtown Huron has a handful of bed-and-breakfasts and short-term rentals. Book early for fall walleye season and summer weekends.
